The latest in baseball news is that the player's union has set forth a proposal that the lowest paid players take the lowest cut in pay this season and the highest paid take the larger cut. If the owners agree, there is talk of Spring training resuming around June 10th with no fans, no spitting, no sunflower seeds and no showering in the locker rooms, and other restrictions. (If they included no grabbing your underwear from the front, I wouldn't be unhappy about that).
The players, of course, like to hear the cheers from the crowd. Would the announcers and photography crew be enough? Perhaps someone should start looking into developing interactive TV. The fans in their living rooms could choose cheer or boo and it would sound at the stadium.
I know that some (like Nancy) aren't fans of spring training, but hey, baseball is baseball!! I frankly love spring training. I get to see up and coming players. I was a great fan of Bote during his first spring training game.
Please, please you owner jerks, agree to this!
In the immortal words of Annie Savoy in Bull Durham: "Walt Whitman once said, "I see great things in baseball. It's our game, the American game. It will repair our losses and be a blessing to us." You could look it up." Maybe that is right, in which case I agree with Nena re the owner jerks agreeing to the player psoplsal. I had heard that the players were submitting their own proposal, but hadn't heard the details yet. Baseball played in dead silence - it will certainly be odd. Kind of like those games that have long rain delays, and by the time they finally start up again, there are just a few people in the stands and you can hear every one of them. Like that, only worse...
ReplyDeleteWalt Whitman? I need to wikipedia - baseball was hardly started, but I am not really - his birthday tomorrow - good timing, Nance. He was around when baseball was getting going, so Annie was right on, again, as always.
DeleteSo, curfew in Chicago? we've got Proud Boys getting ready for the Big Luau - this is not a good year, boys and girls.
Is baseball going to use the robo-umpire calling yeas and nays?
they should let the vendors wander around, hawking their wares, just for the sound effect. What could that hurt? And Nena, baseball without adjusting your cup just doesn't work for the participants - just keep looking away.
ReplyDeleteAnd Pat Piper on the PA (for you true oldtimers!)
I've been getting ads on fb by Marquee for some kind of opera. I hope they are taking a bath on the strike. Miss the Cubs but am happy to see the Ricketts taking a bath.
ReplyDeleteI saw something on the thankfukky shortened sports section about how the owners are shortchanging the fans by not giving us some form of baseball. Well we hardly expect anything of the owners, but the players, what do they owe us?
So, I have a new conspiracy theory - lord knows, we need a few more - reason Ricketts and Thad didn't make any moves or signing - because they knew the virus was already coming in November - only fly in that ointment - they would have sold the Cubs in October, when they could have reaped the veritable pre-whirlwind profit.
